2x2 vs 2x4 vs 4x4 Grow Tent: Which Size Fits Your Home Grow?
Picking a grow tent tends to come down to two numbers: the floor space you can spare and the ceiling height above it. Plant goals come next. On our home grow setup pages, we plan a 2x2 around one plant, a 2x4 around two, a 3x3 around up to three, a 4x4 around four and a 5x5 around up to six. Larger tents usually call for a stronger light and a bigger fan, so tent size shapes the rest of your gear list too.
This guide walks through how to choose. If you want to see how many plants can be arranged in each tent, our plant count by tent size guide covers layouts in more detail.

š Measure Your Space First
Before comparing tents, measure the spot where the tent will live.
Footprint and working room
A tent's footprint is only part of the space it needs. You may want room to open the zippered door fully, reach the back corners and run ducting out of a port. A tent pushed tight into a corner can be harder to work in than a slightly smaller tent with space around it.
Ceiling height
Check the ceiling, not just the floor. The light hangs from the top of the tent, and plants grow up toward it, so height matters as much as width. For example, AC Infinity's CLOUDLAB 722 and CLOUDLAB 422 share a 24 x 24 in footprint, but the 722 stands 72 in tall and the 422 stands 48 in tall, which suits closets and shelves with low ceilings.
Doorways and outlets
Tents come packed flat, so doorways are rarely the problem. Outlets and a place to vent air usually are. Note where the nearest outlet is and whether a window or another room can take the exhaust.

š Grow Tent Sizes at a Glance
Here is how the five sizes line up on our equipment pages. Plant counts are the planning numbers we use on each size page; your own count may vary with pot size and training style.
| Tent | Plants (our size page) | Matched tent | Matched light | Inline fan size |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2x2 | 1 | CLOUDLAB 722 (24 x 24 x 72 in) or 422 (24 x 24 x 48 in) | Included with the 2x2 kits | 4-inch |
| 2x4 | 2 | CLOUDLAB 642 (48 x 24 x 72 in) | IONBOARD S24 | 4-inch |
| 3x3 | 3 | CLOUDLAB 733 (36 x 36 x 72 in) | IONFRAME EVO4 | 6-inch |
| 4x4 | 4 | CLOUDLAB 844 (48 x 48 x 80 in) | IONFRAME EVO6 | 6-inch |
| 5x5 | Up to 6 | CLOUDLAB 866 (60 x 60 x 80 in) | IONFRAME EVO8 | 8-inch |
You can compare every tent in one place on our grow tents page.

āļø 2x4 vs 4x4: The Most Common Decision
Many home growers end up choosing between these two.
When a 2x4 tends to fit
A 2x4 slides along a wall and takes up half the floor of a 4x4. Every plant sits within arm's reach from the front door, which can make watering and training simpler. It works well when you plan to run two plants and want the tent to blend into a room.
When a 4x4 tends to fit
A 4x4 gives you four times the floor of a 2x2 and more room to spread a canopy. The trade-off is reach: plants at the back can be harder to get to, and the tent needs a stronger light and more airflow. If you have the space and want to plan around four plants, a 4x4 may suit you better. See the 4x4 grow setup for the matched gear.

š² Rectangular vs Square Tents
Square tents (2x2, 3x3, 4x4, 5x5) pair naturally with square light footprints, so coverage tends to be even from corner to corner. Rectangular tents like the 2x4 pair with lights built for that shape, such as the IONBOARD S24, which AC Infinity rates for 2 x 4 ft coverage. Whichever shape you choose, match the light's coverage to the tent rather than mixing shapes.

š¬ļø How Tent Size Sets the Rest of Your Gear
Once you pick a tent, the light, fan, filter and ducting follow from it. On our size pages, the 2x2 and 2x4 setups use 4-inch fans, filters and ducting, the 3x3 and 4x4 setups use 6-inch, and the 5x5 uses 8-inch. Keeping the fan, filter and duct the same diameter means everything connects without adapters. The inline fans page lists each size side by side.

š± Starting From Clones
Rooted clones skip germination, so you can plan your tent around the canopy you want later rather than the size of the plants on arrival. One clone per plant slot is a simple starting point. For layout ideas by pot size, see the plant count guide, and for filling a canopy evenly, our low-stress training guide may help.

š Start Small or Size Up?
A smaller tent can be easier to keep stable and may suit a first grow. A larger tent leaves room to grow into. Some growers start with a 2x2 or 2x4 and later add a second tent, using the first for younger plants. Think about where your next grow might go before you buy, so today's tent still has a role later.

ā Frequently Asked Questions
What size grow tent should a beginner start with?
Many beginners do well with a 2x4 or 3x3. These sizes leave room for more than one plant while keeping every plant within reach. The best size is the one that fits your space comfortably.
Is a 2x4 or a 4x4 grow tent better for a home grow?
Neither is better in general. A 2x4 suits narrower spaces and two plants on our size pages; a 4x4 suits larger spaces and four plants, and needs a stronger light and more airflow.
How tall does a grow tent need to be?
It depends on your ceiling and plants. The CLOUDLAB tents in our setups range from 48 in (the 422) to 80 in (the 844 and 866) tall. Taller tents can leave more room between the light and the canopy.
What size grow tent do I need for one plant?
On our size pages, a 2x2 is planned around one plant. The 2x2 kits use a 24 x 24 in footprint in either a 72 in or 48 in tall tent.
Does a bigger tent need a bigger light and fan?
Usually, yes. In our setups the light steps up with each tent size, and the inline fan goes from 4-inch to 6-inch to 8-inch.
Can a grow tent fit in a closet or spare room?
Often, yes. A 2x2 tent, especially the 48 in tall CLOUDLAB 422, is designed with closets and shelves in mind. Measure the space and leave room to open the door.
